Saejima tries to reason with Kadena, who jumps off without a word. The group hears a splash and after some time, Kadena resurfaces, asking everyone to join her. Saejima declares that he is in love and attempts to jump and is held back by the rest. Eikichi realises that Kadena has guts and seems to recall something familiar about her name. He informs her that he is getting interested to find out who she really is and Kadena admires his Zephyr. She tells a surprised Eikichi to come with his ZII before driving off and Eikichi wonders how she knows about his ZII. Elsewhere the Oni-baku follow Kadena to see her entering a club and the duo wonder if it’s a part-time job. They bust into the club and Kadena welcomes them. After exchanging chit chat to avoid attention of the crowd, Kadena agrees to tell them everything if they beat her at strip rock-paper-scissors, much to the Oni-baku’s delight. Eikichi gains the upper hand at first and claims to be known as Rochambonizuka in elementary school, having never lost a game. We cut to the Oni-baku getting kicked out stark naked, complaining that they didn’t realise that they were playing against every woman in the club. Sometime later, the On-baku breaks into Kadena’s home at night attempting to find out clues about Kadena. They get distracted when they find Kadena’s panties in the drawer and Eikichi spots a photograph of Kadena with a man on a Honda. Ryuji finds a case of cash approximating around 3 million yen hidden in the drawers and Eikichi realises how dangerous Kadena may be. They hear a noise and hide as Kadena opens the door, arriving with a group of Yakuza-like men. She tells them they can discuss business without interruptions. Eikichi tries to be inconspicuous as he hides in the clothes rack and Kadena reminds the men of their promise to sell her some goods for 30 million yen. |
Chapter 239: “Cross” Kadena hands over 30 million yen and the men marvel at her ability to get such an amount over a short time. However, due to the goods being difficult to obtain through legitimate means, the men demand an extra 10 million yen due to the yen strength falling and the Oni-baku conjecture what goods Kadena is buying. Eikichi slips from the rack and Kadena notices his presence. She agrees with the men that she will get the additional amount and points a gun at them, telling them to leave. Kadena appears to leave and Eikichi comes out of his hiding spot. Kadena sneaks up from behind and points the gun at Eikichi, who tries to explain. She states that he heard the whole conversation and pulls the trigger, to Eikichi’s horror. Outside, Mariko arrives at Kadena’s apartment and questions why Kadena has changed so much. She spots Ryuji outside hanging from the window. A panicking Ryuji reveals that Kadena has Eikichi hostage at gunpoint and Mariko starts laughing, stating that Kadena hasn’t changed after all. Inside, the gun Kadena is holding is revealed to be a torch lighter, which simply starts burning Eikichi’s hair. Eikichi questions Kadena why she is involved with so much money and she replies it’s her atonement for being out of control in the past. Now, she has no choice but to bear a big cross on her shoulders. She reveals that she starts talking whenever Eikichi is around and wonders why. Eikichi offers his chest for her to cry on and Kadena laughs it off. She challenges Eikichi in a one-on-one race and Eikichi warns her that he is quite fast. She utters that she use to know someone who acted cocky like Eikichi, who questions if she knew Masaki. Outside, Mariko reveals to Ryuji that the gun is just a lighter, a trick that Kadena often used to scare people. Ryuji asks who Kadena really is and Mariko tells him that she use to be a hero to each and every biker in Shonan. We cut back to Kadena, who states that she will tell Eikichi everything he wants to know if he can keep up with her. |

Eikichi & Kadena Chapter 240: “Last Signal 1” Kadena warns Eikichi that his Zephyr might not be enough. Outside, Mariko tells Ryuji about a race known as “Last Signal”. We cut to Eikichi and Kadena in their vehicles at a red light. Kadena tells Eikichi that they start once the light goes green, their “last signal”. Kadena’s Nissan Skyline gets the upper hand and Eikichi’s Zephyr lags behind. Eikichi accelerates and overtakes Kadena as they approach a red light. Eikichi slows down but to his surprise, Kadena speeds up, narrowly avoiding a collision with an oncoming truck as she runs the red light. Eikichi realises the concept of Kadena’s “last signal”. Elsewhere, Mariko continues her explanation to Ryuji, the race involves treating the first light on 134 near Enoshima as the “last signal” and race without stopping and ignoring all other signals. Ryuji exclaims that there must be at least a hundred signals on the route and Mariko states that a green light is safe but a red light is where the danger lies. Kadena was a legend when it came to the “Last Signal” race. We cut back to Eikichi, who avoids cars as he tries to keep up with Kadena and suddenly realises who Kadena is. We cut back to Mariko, who tells Ryuji that Kadena was a legend and she was so happy when Kadena let her join her Purple Haze gang. However, Kadena disappeared after that accident, in which Kadena’s younger brother died in the “Last Signal” race. Elsewhere, Kadena expresses her disappointment at Eikichi’s reputation as the fastest in Shonan, surmising that he is only a kid after all. She starts to question whether Eikichi really inherited Masaki’s ZII as she has only seen him on the Zephyr. To her surprise, Eikichi catches up from the distance, who tells her to stop daydreaming. The two racers approach a large intersection where the light turns red and Kadena tells Eikichi to brace himself and follow her. |
Eikichi & Kadena Chapter 241: “Last Signal 2” Eikichi and Kadena speed towards the intersection as oncoming vehicles screech to a halt to avoid the two racers. To Eikichi’s amazement, Kadena slips through as the other vehicles crash into each other, blocking Eikichi’s path. As Kadena rides on, a stunned Eikichi realises that Kadena must be the woman in purple that Masaki had often talked about. Sometime later, Eikichi catches up to Kadena at the finish line and states that he will beat her next time, Kadena reveals that she loves the night view there and Eikichi takes in the view of Shonan from such a high vantage point. Kadena states that she is not as good as she use to be, showing Eikichi a dent in her Nissan Skyline. Smiling, she warns Eikichi that she doesn’t plan on losing to him either. She reveals that she only lost once, to a cocky man riding a ZII and was really surprised to find out that he had died. Even after beating Kadena, Masaki would often ride behind her as he loved watching the tail lights. Eikichi asks if Masaki was that cross that Kadena had to bear and Kadena smiles, telling Eikichi that he has the same scent as Masaki which makes her open up to him. She states that the cross has nothing to do with Masaki and tells Eikichi to follow her. They arrive at a hospital and Eikichi is surprised to see the name “Kadena Kazuhito” on the doorway. A man on life support lies in the room and Eikichi recognises him as the one in the photo he saw in Kadena’s apartment. Kadena tells Eikichi that Kazuhito is her younger brother and she sometimes feels that death might have been a better fate for him, instead of sleeping for the past four years. |
Chapter 242: “Tomorrow” Kadena reveals that she used to be the fastest Last Signal racer around, earning the nickname “Purple Haze Mary”. She had no fear and losing didn’t cross her mind, going to race in Hakone every week. Many challengers lost money, died or became disabled for life. One day, Kazuhito shows off his new Kawasaki Ninja 900 to Kadena and vows to become just as fast as his sister and eventually beat her in a race. Believing that racing requires 90% skill and 10% luck, Kadena tried to avoid racing Kazuhito, believing that he lacked a racer’s skill. It was around that time that rumours of a crazy, dangerous racer driving a black Levin started who does whatever it takes to win a Last Signal race. Sooner or later, a huge crash is bound to occur if the racer continues and Kadena decided to step up and race the black Levin. With no fear of losing a game that she started, Kadena takes on the black Levin and the two race. Kadena appears to have the upper hand and the two arrive at an intersection where the black Levin gets hit by an oncoming truck. Kadena blames the driver’s cockiness for the accident, stating that he reaped what he sowed. As onlookers call for an ambulance, the black Levin driver crawls out, revealing to be Kazuhito. A bloody Kazuhito utters that his sister is awesome before passing out, much to Kadena’s horror. Not realising how bad Kazuhito wanted to race her, Kadena remembers him telling her how he obtained a new secret racing car. Since that day, Kazuhito has been in a coma and reveals the Yakuza men in her apartment earlier were corrupt medical care co-ordinators who are selling her health care equipment that would enable her to take care of Kazuhito at home. She wonders if having to become a teacher and forcing stupid students to study is her atonement for Kazuhito’s accident. A silent Eikichi leaves Kadena, who starts to cry. Sometime later, Kadena hears revving noises outside the window and recognises the engine noise. She looks outside to see Eikichi with Masaki’s ZII, who tells Kadena to pick up where they left off. Eikichi tells her not to dwell on the past like an old lady and it begins to snow. The two race as snow clouds born on the mountains of Hakone drifted east, giving Shonan it’s first snowfall of the year. |
